Journal Day 14
Fort Birchy Campground, Birchy Lake
On TCH 1 East of Dear Lake 50 miles

Change of plans....   after having some difficulty in figuring out a workable ferry schedule to cross from St. Barbe over to Labrador and the cost, we decided to skip this part of our original plan...  winds caused the prior day's ferry to be cancelled...  there is 50 miles of coastline that can be driven and several interesting places to visit, but we weighed that cost with other places East we wanted to see and figured we would spend it on additional camping days in East Newfoundland this time...

So... we were up early and packed and on the road south from St. Anthony back to Gros Morne National Park, on our way to TCH 1 East..  we stopped for awhile to visit the lighthouse at Lobster Cove, guarding Bonne Bay, the entrance to Rocky Harbour in the center of the park...  the lighthouse is still in use.   Prior to its construction almost 200 years ago, a house near the sea  had placed a lantern in the window, fueled with donations of oil from others in the village to make sure it continued to burn and show the way home to fisherman...   The lighthouse has a flag staff flying the Canadian flag and others that are used to signal a message to ships entering the harbor... currently the message is "gaffer" which the term for a young man...  no particular meaning anymore...  but the flags were important in earlier days for signalling between ships....

We had planned to stop over for a day at Lomont, and to visit the Trout River on the lower side of the park which we had not visited yet, but as we got to the park area the rain began to pour again...   it was fully overcast and we decided that it was not going to let up for awhile, so we decided to continue on to TCH 1 (trans canadian highway) and start our journey east...  Fort Birchy is a summer camp in a beautiful lake region about 50 miles east of Deer Lake...  Our next stop is planned to be Twillingate which is in he middle of an island reagion in north central Newfoundland... we are currently trying to decide where we want to spend the weekend during the 3 day holiday coming up...
