Journal Day 17
Peyton's Woods RV Campground
Twillingate, Newfoundland

Fogo Island sidetrip - Another great day and we were on the road early to catch the ferry to Fogo Island..  along the way we were able to get some great shots of the islands with the sun in the east...   We just missed the ferry so had to wait 2 hours for the later one that left 11:15...   that still gave us plenty of time on the island...    We took a sidetrip to Port Albert while we were waiting...    once on the ferry it was only 1 hour 15 minutes to Fogo Island, including a short stop at the Change Island on the way...  Fogo is the largest inhabited island in Newfoundland, about 25 Kilometers long...    we made a couple sidetrips, stopping to eat a lunch Suazanne made next to a cemetery at Seldom....  then we pushed on to the end and Fogo City...  this is where the Brimestone "rock" is located that is one of the 4 corners of the "flat earth" as the Flat Earth Society (still with 1400 members) shows on their map....   the rock can be climbed but is a strenuous climb up scaffolded steps and then across rock, along some narrow ledges... in fairly high winds today....  Suzanne chose not to go up, but followed me with binoculars on my climb to the top, taking some pictures of me standing on top once I got there....   Once at the top the winds were fierce so I sat down to take the pictures....  great views from all sides of the rocks running into the ocean, and of the city of Fogo below...

I sat on top of the rock for some time taking photos (and scared to start the descent down)....    Suzanne had gone behind a building and sat in the car, not wanting to watch me skirt the ledges at the top necessary to come down (later I found others were going over the rocks on their stomachs to avoid the ledge)...  I stopped several times coming down, and all together today managed to take about 72 photos...  too bad I can only include a couple of my favorites here for now....

Tomorrow we may stay here one more day, or start east again....  we are going to think about it tonight....  Today the "check engine" light in the Jeep came on again, so I will be looking for another Chrysler dealer in St John's when we get there on Tuesday... we are just enjoying this area too much to worry about it for now....
