Day 18 |
| We decided to stay one more day.... woke up to rain early in the morning,
but by 8:00 it had cleared up and eventually the sun came out for another beautiful day.
The Aliner and car needed a good cleaning, so we took today to get
caught up and prepared for the next phase of the trip. We showered, shaved, and dressed up a bit, and went to church.... The St.Peter Anglican church is the oldest church in Newfoundland still in use... it was beautiful inside, with a pipe organ installed in 1897... the Church itself was built in 1839, and the bell tower added in 1859... still ringing for a few minutes to announce the beginning of the service.... A large church with balconies on each side, it only had occupants in a few pews at the rear of the church... 30 or 40 people attending.... we sat in the back so we could watch others and make sure we followed the rituals correctly.... however, parts of the service were quite familiar since both Suzanne and I were raised in the Congregational church... it was a nice service with a special prayer for the Queen, and for the fisherman... The church was in very good shape, like most of the older homes and other buildings here... there seems to be real pride of ownership here that is apparent in individual homes... After church we went to the rectory behind the church that is now a museum and gift shop.... for a $1 donation we were allowed to tour the rooms that had been decorated with furnishing from that earlier period... the ladies in the gift shop told us that all the T-shirts and Sweat Shirts were half off... end of season sale... they were also the most reasonably priced we had seen so far, so we "stocked up"... The rest of the afternoon was used to wash clothes, clean out the Car and Aliner, and dig through our basket of brochures and maps to layout the next leg of the trip... we are not sure if we will go all the way into St. John's tomorrow or stop one night on the way... it is clear there is more to see in Newfoundland than we can get to on this trip, so we will focus on a few areas that are of primary interest... This has been a great park...beautiful views, great weather... a very relaxing stay... and the owner has been especially gracious and helpful.... we have had continuous Internet access so updates are probably coming faster than they are being read... but that may stop for awhile when we are back on the road... so this may be the last update for a few days... we will see... |
