Day 20 |
| I was up early and off to the Chrysler dealer... they said they could not
work me in today, so I made an appointment for tomorrow morning... nice that the
dealer is right next to the big Avalon Mall, so we can go and have coffee and walk around
while we wait... It would be nice if they find something to fix this time.... So I came back and we packed up a lunch and headed back for the Water Street section.... it was very busy with no parking around but we did manage to find the one shop in town that makes Sushi... I ran in to see what was available.... the old Japanese proprietor had what is called a "convenience" store, meaning a bit of everything for neighborhood shoppers.... he looked confused when I asked him about his Sushi he had advertised, and then told me he only makes it upon request on Wednesday's and Saturday. So he did not have any today... I asked if there was any other place in town that made Sushi, and he said no...... this is consistent with the Chinese Buffet which was primarily Newfoundland variations of deep fried items, and French fries with fried rice.... all foods seem to come out looking the same here.... We headed back up Signal Hill again with the sun higher in the sky, hoping for good photo opportunities.... Suzanne waited in the car while I hiked down and around the hill to a point where I could see the mouth of the harbor, and get some good shots into the harbor toward the city... From the same point, I was able to get a better shot of St. John's, and also of the coast line next to the mouth of the harbor.... It was a long strenuous walk back up the hills and steps to get to the parking lot.... but worth the views... Then we headed off toward Cape Spear... there you can stand on the most easterly spot in North America... and view the lighthouse and shoreline that are situated there... I found the location with my GPS to be 47' 31.405N, 52' 37.214W.. of course the westerly coordinate is the important one... If anyone found a place further point east, they must have been standing in water... A beautiful spot, and being 11 km out of the city, much more serene than the Signal Hill park... we had a lunch there and enjoyed the stay... We finally returned to the city, stopping at supermarket and picking up some things, including a package of Cod that Suzanne prepared for our supper in the park.... a nice finish to a long day.... after getting another assessment on the Jeep tomorrow morning, we will be ready move on to the Irish Loop, in the southern part of the Avalon Peninsula on Thursday.... we are already tired of the city pace.... |
