Journal Day 24
Lomond RV Campground
Lom0nd, Newfoundland

We enjoyed getting up slowly and having our complimentary continental breakfast at the motel...  it felt good to be able to spread out, watch the news on TV and have easy internet access through our room telephone line for a change....   we hit the road about 11:00 and had an easy drive over here to Gros Morne National Park....    this time we took the lower branch to Trout River and the Tablelands....  an area we missed last time due to the rain....  we pulled into the private Lomond RV Campground and got setup.... then headed on to the village of Trout River at the end of the road near the Ocean, where the Trout River Pond begins....   it was a beautiful drive...    We went by the Tablelands but it was dusk and not conducive to photo taking....    we drove into Trout River and signed up for the boat tour through the Tablelands at 1:00 tomorrow...    we are hoping for sunshine and some great photo opportunities...

On the way to Trout River, we stopped at a small town that had great views across to Rocky Harbour where we stayed last time.. we found a light house there and stopped for a visit....  met some folks from Whitehorse, Yukon Territory, and exchanged some notes from my trip through there on the way to Alaska....  there were some great panoramic views of Bonne Bay along the route....   we hope the light is better tomorrow when we go for the boat trip....

The highlight of our trip out to Trout River... was spotting a very large bull moose on the way back....we pulled off the road and got out the binoculars since it was on the side of a hill across a meadow and stream away from us.... it was grazing by itself, and we got some great views of it as it strutted around the hill side.... Suzanne and I took turns watching and other cars stopped and left... you really needed the binoculars to fully appreciate the enormity of the animal, and the huge rack of horns on its head....  We were both thoroughly impressed with its size, and the show it provided us for some period of time....  too bad it was out of reach of our camera range (would have been a brown blob in the trees)...

We returned and did our wash since there was good facilities here... met a young gal in the Laundry from Germany that was back packing around Newfoundland and Labrador.... we had seen her walk into out campground at Twillingate late at night while we were there...   she said she was doing research on whales, and has also taken the long ferry from Lewisporte up to Goose Bay, Labrador, and later back....  she had her tent set up near us and near an English girl that came into pack that was also back packing solo around the country...  we were impressed by their willingness to travel alone in this country, although probably safer than in the US...
