Day 34 |
| Ooops... slight adjustment to our schedule.. we decided to spend a
couple nights at Rockwood City Park in St. John, New Brunswick.... We arrived at St
John around Noon and decided to spend the night.... our camping book led us to
Rockwood City Park, right in the heart of St John.... they claim this to be the largest
city park in Canada, designed by the same person that did Central Park in NYC (we were not
sure whether to believe that or not)... It is high on a hill overlooking the
harbor and city itself, and we were given our choice of campsites since we were early
arriving.... we went to the top and picked what we thought was the best site, backed in
the Aliner so our big skylight let us overlook
the harbor and city... awesome spot... We tried to follow directions to get to the Market Center and information area in the city....most comfusing city I have ever driven in, with lots of one way streets and overpasses.... we found the center, but no turning lane to enter and we were forced onto throughfare that led us to a different part of the city, but luckily came out at the Reversing Falls view point... Reversing Falls is one of the main attractions in St. John... located on the Bay of Fundy, with the St. John river running through the city, it is affected by the tidal cycles... the St. John river runs into the Bay of Fundy during low tide, then during high tide, the salt water from the bay actually forces it way up the river causing it to run backwards for over 100 miles.... the cycles continue to run with the water shifting directions on a 6 hour cycle... the entrance to the river has underwater ledges that form a falls, or a rapids at low tide, and at high tide this is reversed, rising above the ledge and forcing the bay water up the river, with rapids running the opposite directions.... at the point where the water levels are equal, the water stops and is calm for about 20 minutes during the shift.... it is only at this time that boats can safely move from the harbor up the river to the bays where they launch their boats.... so sailors leaving the upper bays, going to the ocean (Bay of Fundy) need to be aware of the tide cycles to time their return... this was one of the most interesting aspects of the visit to St. John... we arrived when the tide was pushing the water up the river, but close to equilibrium, and stayed for an hour to watch the calm, then the shift as the river current started to move back toward the bay..... we left and found the Market Center, had dinner, then went back to the view point to see the low tide point and the rapids moving very fast revealing the ridge where the fall occurs.... neat! We came back to find the man from Minnesota we met in Prince Edward Island camped next to us.... he built a fire and we talked until the mosquitos caused us to turn in.... we left the curtains open across our large skylight overlooking the City so we could watch the twinkling lights.... With the difficulty we had finding our way around the city, even with detailed maps, we decided to take a 2 hour city tour at 10:00 tomorrow that picks up here at the park..... |
