Journal Day 36
Timberland Campground
Trenton, Maine near Bar Harbor

We are back in the good ole USA....   We were up early on Campobello Island, packed up the Aliner to have it ready to go,  and then  drove to the far southeast corner (Liberty Point)....  great views as in the north part of the island...  long beaches of dark sand....   while we were standing at one of the observation points, we saw several whales playing tag.... and saw what we think was a seal bobbing around near the rocky shore...  it was about 5 miles of gravel road through the dense forest to get to the end of the island... very pretty with early signs of the leaves turning to fall colors...

We returned to Roosevelt International Park after it opened at 10:00 and went on a tour of the grounds, then the summer cottage... FDR was born here and spent much of his time prior to losing his ability to walk to polio...  eventually the cottage and grounds were given equally to Canada and USA governments and are being managed as the only International Park...  funded equally by both governments, and staffed with half Canadians and other half Americans..  the island still is within New Brunswick although accessed by bridge from Lubec, Maine....  the grounds were beautiful, and the cottage housed all the original Roosevelt furnishings since this was just a summer house...   the tour guides and narrators strategically positioned throughout the property made the visit especially educational...  well worth the stop...

By noon we were ready hookup the Aliner and leave the island...  we crossed the bridge and came to US customs check.... I expected something very informal, but they checked IDs, looked in the back of the Jeep, going through bags... actually did more than when we came through Calais...  all for an overnight stay...  but then we were off, heading down coastal route 1 again...

After a couple sidetrips to get closer to the ocean, we arrived at the Bar Harbor turnoff....  checking our campground book, it looked like the sites near Bar Harbor were very expensive, so we stopped at Trenton, about 14 miles away on route 3...  It is a Good Sam park with a modem connection for $20... some of the campgrounds closer to Bar Harbor, with Ocean views, went as high as $60 a night...   We had the Aliner parked and setup by about 4:00 PM (we gained an hour coming from Campobello Island which is on Atlantic time)... so we decided to drive in to Bar Harbor and visit Acadia National Park which covers much of the island that Bar Harbor sits on....   We entered Acadia and followed the loop around the park, taking about 2 hours...  gorgeous scenery and views...  trees are turning to their fall colors which made for some nice views from the higher elevations in the park....  and of course lots of seashore and views of the islands...

We heard that it might rain tonight and tomorrow, so we tried to cram in as much as we could  in the evening, including a trip through Bar Harbor which is really a tourist town....  Suzanne said it looks like Cape Cod with all the shops and hotels... and lots of tourists.... here to watch the changing of the seasons I guess... anyway, we both yearned for the less commercial areas of Newfoundland we had learned to love while we were there.... we decided that would move on tomorrow, into Bangor and then catch route 2 west through New Hampshire into Vermont....
