Newfoundland 2001
A Tour of the Maritimes

This is the second of several "once in a lifetime" camping trips planned with the Aliner.  Our original itinerary changed as we proceeded on the trip, finding the Maritime regions to be more vast than we had realized.   Our focus for this trip was on Newfoundland.   Our trip was cut short in Nova Scotia where on September 11th while on a short ferry crossing to join the Cabot Trail on Great Breton, we received news of the terrorist attacks in the US.  Our concentration and interest in the trip deteriorated rapidly.   We only remained for an additional week while waiting for the border crossings to clear.   Here is the final trip itinerary summary:
  • Rochester, Minnesota, across Wisconsin, to Michigan Upper Peninsula, camping near Sault Ste. Marie on US side.
  • Entered into Canada at Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, heading east.
  • Slipped past Montreal, Quebec, heading north
  • Crossed the St Lawrence, at Quebec City, Quebec, headed north
  • Entered New Brunswick  at Campbellton
  • North Sydney, NS, to Port aux Basques, Newfoundland by Ferry (6 hour voyage)
  • North along the Viking Trail to St. Anthony, and L'Anse aux Meadows, only authenticated Viking settlement in North America...   most northern point in Newfoundland.
  • Across to Twillingate, along the "Road to the Isles" north central Newfoundland.  Visit to Fogo Island, one of the four corners of the "Flat Earth" according to the society of the same name.
  • On to St. John's, Newfoundland, oldest and most Eastern City on the continent - Visited most easterly spot, and Marconi cross Atlantic transmission points.
  • Toured Southern Avalon Peninsula to see migrating caribou herd and unique seashore.
  • Back across the island to Gros Morne National Park, NF (lower Park area) - Visit Tablelands and Trout River Pond.
  • Port aux Basques, NF, to North Sydney, Nova Scotia (7 hour voyage at night)
  • Upper Cape Breton Peninsula in Nova Scotia. Toured the highlands along the Cabot Trail, and Fortress of Louisburg reconstruction.
  • Ferry across to Prince Edward Island (spent 3 days)
  • Prince Edward Island via bridge to New Brunswick
  • St John, New Brunswick.  Reversing Falls, and town markets tour.
  • Entered US at Calais, Maine, then took bridge to Campobello Island, New Brunswick, from Lubec, Maine, to camp for the night.
  • Bar Harbor, Maine, and Acadia National Park.
  • West on route 2 across Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, New York to the interstate home to Minnesota.

The development of this plan was somewhat delayed due to our involvement with the newly formed Aliner Owners Club.    I was commissioned to do the club website and Suzanne the quarterly newsletter.  We were on the road by mid-August.    We regret not making it across to Labrador on this trip, but have added that to our plans for a return to Newfoundland in the future.
