Arriving at Port aux Basques Harbor on the Ferry

Newfoundland might be the best kept secret in North America...  a country that is so accessible (via ferry) and friendly..  yet so rich in its culture and history...   and so willing to share it with visitors...  Yes, Walmarts exist in the major cities, but life in the villages along the water, many isolated yet from road travel, remains much as it has been over time.   Beautiful mountains and ponds (what they call fresh water lakes) cover the rocky terrain.   Fishing still dominates the culture although a moritorium imposed on Cod fishing has had a major impact on the Newfoundland economy, and is forcing many of the smaller communities to embrace tourism for existence.    But time is of the essence, as the secret is slowly getting out...

Some facts of interest:  Newfoundland has its own time zone, 1/2 hour ahead of Atlantic time.   On Newfoundland Island, there are no snakes, ticks, skunks, and other undesirables, which make it a hikers paradise.   Beware of the large population of moose and the largest black bears in North America though.  Newfoundland dogs are a rare breed and seldom seen there, with a fairly short life span of from 6 to 10 years.  There are good roads and ample campgrounds for travel.
