We really enjoyed our 3 day stay on Prince Edward Island... taking the ferry across to the island from the east side, and then leaving by the new bridge on the west. Beautiful seashores and provincial camping areas (not well documented in the camping guides) allow you to camp right near the water. We stayed at a private campground in Charlottetown which is located centrally on the Island and took day trips to the east and west most points. The highlight of our stay was the International Shellfish Festival held in Charlottetown near the water which allowed the local fisherman to compete in various contests. Also the major restaurants in Eastern Canada had representatives competing for the best fish chowder recipe. There were plates of steamed mussels, and oysters or soft-shelled clams on the half shell. All served with a variety of local brews. PEI is heavily traveled during the summer months with vacationers from across eastern Canada. Great beaches and large camping areas and lots of motels to accommodate the crowds. We visited in mid September and found campgrounds closing and the beaches empty. Our favorite time for visiting such places. Prince Edward Island is a fun and picturesque place to visit, whether or not you feel the need to visit the origin of Anne of Green Gables or not. Our visit to Prince Edward Island starts in Journal Day 30 |
